Photostream Is Seriously Dangerous

Photostream for iOS is seriously dangerous. Many/most (all??) people that I talk to assume that Photostream magically backs up their photos and videos. I guess I cannot blame them--the Apple commercials and iOS itself makes you believe that photos "just work" and therefore do not require any additional thought or planning.

But...what do I tell my sister when she gets a new iPhone and can't find that photo she took of her new baby? Was it more than ~1000 pictures ago? Oh..yea, no that's gone. What about all my videos? Oooo, that's gone too--Photostream doesn't handle videos at all.

There is danger in making things too simple; so simple that people don't bother understanding really how something works.

Crashplan Plugin for FreeNAS

I am very thankful that someone created a Crashplan plugin for FreeNAS. It was a quick, easy install, but unfortunately, it didn't exactly ..work after the easy install. The plugin is new, so I'm sure it will improve. Until then, hopefully the following can help others.

These instructions detail how I set up Crashplan on my FreeNAS box to #1 back up its own files and #2 serve as an incoming destination for other Crashplan clients.

Setup Ubuntu 13.10 for Building CyanogenMod

I run an ESXi whitebox at home. One of my VM's is solely for building CyanogenMod. Somehow, somehow, I manage to mess up the VM every once in awhile though. Here are the steps I take to setup a fresh Ubuntu 13.10 for building CyanogenMod.
